Olaf Herman Ylvisaker
1866 - 1889
1866 - 1889
He was born in 1866 when NTY and Bestemor were living in Glashaugen, and so emigrated with his parents when he was two years old.
He went to parochial and public schools before entering Luther when he was 15. He graduated in 1888. While at Luther he contracted TB and went to California in an attempt to regain his health. Success did not follow and he died on the train trying to reach home, this in the Fall of 1889. The family was distraught when this news reached them. He was not married.
He was the third oldest of the five brothers and was close to Ivar, two years younger.
It is apparent that he was well liked by his classmates at Luther, witness the long and newsy letters he received during his time in California. With his siblings, he was devoted to his mother and wrote her with regularity.
He was on the track of becoming a minister after his father and older brother Johan. It seems a shame that he lost his life at so early an age.
