This letter, from Johanna (age 16) to her brother Nikolaus (age 13), provides a bit of insight into home life. The mystery to be solved is, who was Larkins that she mentions in the letter? And what might Larkins have said to make her not want to tell her mother? 25 U.S. Dollars to the first person who can identify Larkins and provide the back story! It must be both plausible and publishable! Too difficult? Ok, then just provide Larkins identity!
Skak Joakim Nicolaus Ylvisaker was a Pastor in Fergus Falls in 1919 when the tornado struck. A good portion of the town was destroyed and 57 people were killed. Andreas went there immediately after news of the event spread and sent the following letter to Bestemor.
In April of 1923 Homewood burned. The Homewood farm was originally the home of Andreas and Marie where they raised their family. When they moved to Zumbrota it was sold to their sons Paul and Nils, and then later Paul sold his share to Nils. Nils and Ida, their daughter Mary along with Anna, were living there at the time of the late night fire. No one was hurt but the home was burned to the ground. Below are a few pictures of the Homewood farm - the house in the lower left picture is the original house while in the lower right picture is the rebuilt house. The morning after the fire Andreas wrote Paul with the news. A week later Anna followed up with her own letter to Paul. Both of those letters are below the pictures.
